Organizational Description: The Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba (LDAM) provides information, referral, and support for individuals with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), their families and the professionals who work with them. LDAM is a United Way supported agency that also receives grants and carries out fundraising activities to help fulfill our mission. LDAM's vision is to help people impacted by learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders to reach their goals and live better lives.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The position supports the Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba's (LDAM) numeracy tutoring program for children in Grades 1-8 who are demonstrating math difficulties due to a diagnosed or potential learning disability.

JUMP Math tutors provide one-on-one tutoring to students with a goal of motivating and helping gain confidence and academic success in fundamental math skills.

Execute JUMP Math's pre-designed lesson plans using direct and explicit instruction as provided in the JUMP Math Essential Lessons material.

Extend lessons with engaging, and hands-on numeracy activities and games in the areas of: number sense, math fact fluency, math applications, problem solving, and more to provide assistance for the program student's struggles with mathematics.

Perform an informal numeracy assessment on the first day(s) of programming as well as on the last day(s) of programming.
Provide a positive learning environment to invoke self-motivation and confidence for the child as he/she develops principles of number sense and computational fluency.

Provide regular positive feedback on the student's progress to instill self-confidence in their academic development.

Complete session reports and logs to track the child's progress in the program.

Communicate effectively with caregivers on a regular basis to keep them informed of their child's progress.
Skills Required: Proficiency and understanding of math concepts
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Previous experience working as a tutor considered an asset
Previous experience working with individuals with learning disabilities and/or children considered an asset
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Gain knowledge and experience working with children who experience difficulties learning essential math concepts.

Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Evening
Must commit to working with a student for a minimum of 8 weeks and to tutoring twice a week (one hour each time). Additional prep time may be required outside of tutoring.
