Organizational Description: We work primarily with men (18 and over), who have been or may be incarcerated, their families, victims of crime and the community to address the root causes of crime. We offer programs, supports and resources, based on the principles of restorative justice, to our clients at their various stages of involvement with the justice system.

The John Howard Society of Manitoba literacy program works with clients who are interested in improving the basic literacy skills they need for school, work, parenting, and community participation.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The John Howard Society of Manitoba literacy program works with clients who are interested in improving the basic literacy skills they need for school, work, parenting, and community participation.
Our literacy program uses volunteer tutors for a number of purposes, such as working one-to-one with learners over Zoom or assisting in-person drop-in classes at halfway houses. Volunteers tutor learners in various subject areas including but not limiting to English, math, computer skills, basic reading, and social studies.
Due to the large number of Indigenous students that we work with, we are searching for Indigenous volunteers only at this time.
Skills Required: Must identify as Indigenous
Love reading and writing and want to help foster a love for reading and writing in others.
Have strong literacy, numeracy and communication skills.
Are interested in developing positive, supportive relationships of solidarity and mutual respect with criminalized people.
Can agree to abide by strict guidelines concerning client confidentiality.
Must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening
Volunteers can start immediately and can volunteer as fits their schedule. We currently offer drop-in classes at a Halfway House every Tuesday night and one-on-one tutoring sessions over Zoom. We are also hoping to expand our in-person teaching. We may begin a program that would run from January to March. Classes would be held once a week and would most likely be in the afternoon.
