Organizational Description: Katimavik is Canada's leading youth service organization, and it has supported the development of young people into capable and engaged leaders since it was founded in 1977. Katimavik's National Experience gives youth between the ages of 17-25 the opportunity to live in two new Canadian communities for a total of six months. Participants are placed in groups with 10 other youth, and through volunteerism, community outreach projects, group learning activities and workshops, they develop work and life skills, and gain competencies that they can then bring back to their home communities. Over 40,000 volunteers have participated in Katimavik over the decades, and the vast majority agree it is a life-changing experience.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: This fully-immersive 5.5 month program brings together 11 young adults who share and manage a Katimavik house while living in two different communities. The group will be accompanied by a Project Leader, who resides in the house to mentor the life-changing experience.
Skills Required: The National Experience is open to all youth aged 17-25 years old. Participants must be a Canadian citizen or be able to demonstrate that they are legally residing in Canada.

Skills Gained/Related Careers: The Katimavik National Experience challenges youth to make a positive impact in each of the communities while also developing a vast set of skills and competencies. Throughout the 5.5 months, participants are very busy and can expect to participate fully in the following:
Volunteering 30 hours a week at local non-profit organizations;
Learning about Indigenous peoples in Canada and engaging in meaningful truth and reconciliation initiatives;
Team building and collaboration;
Designing and implementing community projects;
Managing all aspects of the Katimavik house, including daily meal preparation;
Plan cultural discovery, group outings and fun activities during evenings and weekends.

This is an immersive 5.5 month program where applicants from Winnipeg and the surrounding region are placed into projects in different regions of Canada, so that they can experience life away from their home community.
