Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Responsible for overseeing the compiling and editing of the annual Prairie Garden book by an editorial subcommittee, and working with an editor administrator, a guest editor and a professional graphic designer and printer to produce the final publication.
Prepare a schedule with milestone dates and deadlines to meet the launch date of the next Prairie Garden. Communicate in a timely manner with committee members. Provide a detailed progress report at each meeting. Work with the guest editor and committee members to decide the theme of the book, contact authors to write articles, find photos and illustrations for articles, determine the order of articles, guide the writing of the guest editor, prepare a press release, and to assist in the planning of a book launch.
Work with an editor administrator to receive, track, and file all content: articles at each stage of editing, author biographies and contact information, photos and other images, image captions, and records pertaining to this content. And to ensure that the above materials are securely stored and remain accessible to other committee members, and to update cumulative subject index for posting on website.
Submit articles to committee members for their evaluation, and then to the editorial subcommittee for editing. Do a final editing of articles, image captions and author biographies for style, content accuracy, and consistency.
With input and approval from committee, prepare cover material, title page, copyright page, acknowledgements, table of contents, updated prior issue list and ordering info, and sponsor page.
Manage the layout, printing process and post-printing duties. Obtain quotes from graphic designers and submit to committee for approval. Organize and send all content material to external graphic designer/layout assistant, who will prepare manuscript for printing.
Work with graphic designer to determine cover design, length of book, size of print run, and layout of all content, and submit to committee for approval. Submit publication in laid-out form and printer's proofs for final proofreading.
Arrange with guest editor and editor administrator to write a thank-you note and send with a free copy to contributing authors.
Skills Required: Candidates should have a good knowledge of horticulture, strong writing, editing, and communication skills, familiarity with collaborative word-processing and cloud-based file-sharing tools, and a proven ability to manage projects with firm deadlines.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: The candidate will gain knowledge about all aspects of the publishing industry, the sales and marketing strategies used to sell books through retailers and directly to readers, and the up-to-date technologies used in the printing of a book. Also. the candidate will learn a great deal about gardening from the articles published in the Prairie Garden.

Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening, Weekend
The editor is required to attend the monthly meeting of the committee that is usually held in the evening on the first Wednesday of the month. Time commitments per week vary throughout the year from as low as a few hours to over 10 hours when the deadline for submission of the book to the publishers approaches. Recent administrative and editing responsibilities will lessen the work load of the editor during peak periods. To compensate for the time needed to complete responsibilities the editor, who is primarily a volunteer, is provided an honorarium of $2400/year, subject to satisfactory progress reports at monthly committee meetings.
