Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The Manitoba College of Social Workers ("MCSW", "The College") encourages expressions of interest from members and public representatives who support professional regulation and are dedicated to the Vision, Mission, Values and Objects of the College. The College seeks Board members who are passionate about supporting and strengthening the profession of social work; actively promoting and supporting professional regulation and ensuring the protection of public in receiving social work

The MCSW Board of Directors is responsible for the overall governance of the College in a manner that upholds public trust. Board members must have a clear understanding of the regulatory and professional support mandates of the College as the Board of Directors is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Social Work Profession Act, the Social Work Profession Regulation, the MCSW ByLaws and other related regulatory legislation. The MCSW Board sets the strategic plan and is responsible for financial and policy governance, as well as registration and complaints appeal functions. In support of the promotion of the profession and the professional interests of members, the College also engages in advocacy and social justice initiatives.

This collaborative Board of Directors is comprised of no fewer than 12 and not more than 15 members of the College, students and public representatives. The Board strives for diversity in regional representation, areas of practice, experience, cultural/racial/ethnic identity, age and gender. In the spirit of reconciliation, the College values the unique and important contributions of Indigenous representatives in the work of the College and embraces opportunities to build relationships and incorporate Indigenous perspectives in its plan, policies and procedures.

Current initiatives of the Board include preparation and planning for the 2022 - 2027 Strategic Plan with an Indigenous and anti-racist lens that incorporates the principles of inclusivity, diversity and equity; strengthening practice standards; and ongoing awareness of the profession and regulation of social
Skills Required: The Board of Directors seeks Board members to contribute the following capacities to the Board:
- experience in the following areas: diverse social work practice areas, professional regulation, finance, legal, previous Board representation
- representation from across Manitoba
- Indigenous perspective, traditional knowledge, elder or knowledge keeper
- Perspective of diverse groups
- Community perspective
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Governance, strategic planning, multidisciplinary work, multicultural work, advocacy.
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening, Weekend
- A minimum of 4 Board meetings per year, generally held in March, June, September and December - Attendance at fall Annual General Meeting (October) - Document review prior to each Board meeting - Attendance at and preparation for Strategic Planning sessions - Participation on one or more committees/working groups of the College An expression of interest does not formalize a commitment, nomination or position on the Board of Directors. Those who express interest are indicating their openness to be contacted by a MCSW representative to discuss and learn more about the College and Board opportunities.
