Organizational Description: NorWest Co-op Community Health Centre has served the Inkster community in northwest
Winnipeg since 1972. NorWest is a forerunner in taking a multi-service, holistic, team approach to health care. We provide a wide range of health related services including medical care, counselling, education and community outreach.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: - Help to create a safe, welcoming space and respectful environment
- Connect with Arabic speaking clients and translate from Arabic to English to help staff support community members
- Use supportive listening and check with staff to identify appropriate resources and make referrals
- Help to serve community during the Fruit and Vegetable Market, providing food as required
- Help to translate when clients are meeting with service providers
- Interact with community using informal, non-invasive conversations, slowly building relationships
- Interact with staff and community, learn about resource centre and enjoy your time
Skills Required: - Very strong English and Arabic language skills
- Maintain confidentiality, healthy boundaries, positive, respectful, non-judgmental, flexible
- Inclusive attitude toward people of all cultures, backgrounds, genders
- Understanding of social determinants of health, and work with a trauma informed lens
- Understanding of the legacy of residential schools and reconciliation moving forward
- Understanding and acceptance of a harm reduction approach to alcohol and drug use
- Experience and/or education in social services and willingness to learn about collaborative practice
- References from the social service field required
