History of MSA
The Manitoba Society of Artists was established in 1902 originally as an organization to recognize the merits of Manitoba's outstanding artists; to promote and encourage visual artists in Manitoba; and to provide a western equivalent to the Ontario Society of Artists.
In addition to showing work by its members, the Society campaigned for an art gallery and art school in the province and arranged for touring exhibits from institutions outside Winnipeg such as the Chicago Art Institute.
After going through several periods of organizational change a renewed Manitoba Society of Artists emerged in 1925 with an executive consisting of Alex J. Musgrove as Secretary andWalter J. Phillips as President. Some notable Manitoba artists who have been members in the early days are: LL Fitzgerald, Marie Guest, Marian Nelson Hooker, Pauline Boutal, Clarence Tillenius, Leo Mol, Tony Tascona, Robert Bruce, Don Reichert, Eva Stubbs.
In 1926, the first annual exhibition was held in the Richardson Brothers Gallery on Main Street in Winnipeg. Since then, except for a few years, the Society has sponsored an annual open juried exhibition in various locations including at the Eaton's and Hudson's Bay Company stores; the Pool of the Black Star Gallery at the Manitoba Legislative Building; the Winnipeg Civic Auditorium; the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Mennonite Heritage Centre Gallery, and Altona Gallery, and affordable private Galleries in the Province.
This year marks the 87th annual OJCE. All Manitobans over age 16 are invited to submit works of which 70-120 are selected for exhibit by an independent jury. The MSA engages one Manitoba juror and one juror from out of province. The jurors also are engaged as speakers for an evening of "Juror Lecture" in conjunction with the show, where the public are welcome. Other educational ventures include member juried exhibitions, lectures, art talks, art history conferences and other member events open to the public.
Today the purpose of the Society is to encourage and promote Manitoba's emerging and professional visual artists and all Manitoba fine art.
OJCE:
The Manitoba Society of Artists encourages new and established artists by hosting this provincewide competition and exhibition each year. All Manitoba residents over the age of 16 are eligible. Typically, 200-400 entries are received and approximately 70 are selected by independent jurors for exhibit in a fine art gallery, for 1-2 months. Of these 10-14 awards of excellence prizes are awarded in different categories. This year the OJCE was presented as an online show msa ojce.com .
