Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: A Public Advisor Volunteer will offer their feedback as a member of the community and general public to support the Prevention and Screening Programs delivered by CancerCare Manitoba. A Public Advisor Volunteer will ensure that the public perspective is a part of decision making for the Prevention and Screening Programs.

In this role, the volunteer will assist by providing their knowledge and experience on:
i. Existing prevention and screening services
ii. The planning and implementation of new initiatives or changes to existing program activities
iii. Educational materials, policies and documents

Public Advisor Volunteers will participate in small group discussions and respond to surveys aimed at understanding public perspectives. Feedback can be provided in person, or via email, telephone or online.

The Public Advisor Volunteers represent a variety of backgrounds and cultures, and
are able to bring and listen to diverse points of view (e.g. in terms of geographic locale, gender, culture, ethnicity, education, employment or abilities) that reflect the population of Manitoba. The age and gender of the public advisors should reflect the populations for which the Prevention and Screening Programs are seeking input on.

- Provide information required by the Prevention and Screening Programs Health Educator to become a registered advisor to CancerCare Manitoba.
- Access email and manage electronic and written documents as required.
- Available to respond to volunteer opportunities as requested by the Health Educator.
- Review materials sent in advance of meetings and be prepared to provide feedback.
- Participate in small group discussions.
- Respond to surveys.
- Review materials at home as required.
- Inform CCMB staff if unavailable for work for any time period, (e.g. vacation, illness, etc.)
- Uphold confidentiality at all times.
- There may be opportunities for some public advisors to be more involved in a leadership capacity together with health system staff.
Skills Required: - Limited knowledge about cancer.
- Willingness to share personal experiences and perspectives in a meaningful way.
- Good communication and listening skills.
- Respectful of others and able to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work collaboratively.
- Willingness to engage with health care providers and other members of the public.
- Interest in public health information.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Public Advisor Volunteers will provide the public perspective to CancerCare Manitoba in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of prevention and screening educational materials and services.
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening, Weekend
- Volunteer opportunities will be short-term and as projects are available. - Each opportunity may involve one or more sessions ranging from one hour to a half day.
