Organizational Description: The Friends of the Public Library is a charitable organization that believes in the value of literacy and learning. Our dedicated volunteers have contributed over $278,000 to support all twenty branches of the Winnipeg Public Library in their service to the community.

The Friends Fall Book Sale is a Winnipeg institution. Bibliophiles from all over the city wait patiently for this annual event, and when the doors open, the Grant Park High School gym is flooded by enthusiastic shoppers who gleefully scoop up armloads of books!

Last year, the Book Sale brought in over $26,000 in revenue; it's the single largest event that the Friends run every year, and is one of the funding sources for the Writer-in-Residence program, Spring Break Family programming, the Family Literacy Playgrounds now in many branches, and other projects and programs.

The scope of this project means that it requires year-round volunteer leadership and participation, and with that in mind three new positions have been created. Chair of Book Sale Committee, Book Room Supervisor and Book Sale Event Manager. Since we understand that everyone is already busy, we have structured the positions to accommodate reasonable time commitments with maximum flexibility.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The Book Sale Event Manager works with the Book Sale Committee to sucessfully execute and manage the Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library book sale, currently held in October.


1. Work with the Book Sale Committee and Friends' Volunteer Coordinator to plan the details of the book sale including room layout, supply requirements, and volunteer assignments.
2. Ensure successful transfer of all the required materials for the book sale.
3. Liaise with the payments area to ensure there is a confident understanding of the process.
4. Supervise the set-up and sale operations of the book sale and provide assistance as needed.

5 hours a week ongoing with a bigger time commitment nearer the date of the sale.
