Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: S.A.M. (Management) Inc. is a non-profit property management company located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. We are currently looking to recruit Volunteer Board members for one of our clients Board of Directors. The building is a +55 Seniors Building located in the St. James/Assiniboia area.

As a Board Member, you would be required to:

- Attend board meetings to review a detailed board package which provides the board details of the management of the building. This includes financial statements, vacancies, arrears, maintenance and capital items. The board also approves the annual budget along with approving large capital expenses.
- Makes informed decisions in the best interests of the corporation.

From time to time, Board members collaborate with community agencies with a focus to:

- Plan and implement new initiatives related to seniors' health and wellness
- Work in partnership with support services for seniors to assist individuals to live independently.
- Promote the growth of healthy community within the building community.
Skills Required: We are looking to recruit enthusiastic and experienced volunteers to hold a position on our client's Board of Directors.

We are looking for individuals with the following interests:

- Working on behalf of seniors insuring they have safe and affordable accommodation;
- Work to strengthen the community within the building so that residents have a place they can call home ;
- Participating in a non-profit board;
Useful skills that will be considered an asset include:
- Ability to read property management documents and financial statements;
- Relationship building skills regarding Directors, staff and tenants;
- Knowledge of any of the following: , finances, leasing, building maintenance, renovations and future trends

The Board welcomes individuals interested in a general board experience.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Board members will gain experience with a non-profit corporation and the important role it has within our community.

You will learn how to work with others in a democratic structure. Have an understanding of all aspects of property management, by-laws and legislation including the residential tenancies act.

The are many benefits to becoming involved as a Board of Director, including:

- Knowledge of how non-profit boards work and the role they play in the community;
- Developing business skills in relation to property management;
- Developing relationships with auditors, housing providers, tenant groups; and
- Experiencing first-hand the importance of charitable work or non-profit work.
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening
Meetings are typically held monthly, in the evening, for approximately an hour to hour and a half.
