Organizational Description: CancerCare Manitoba is the provincially mandated cancer agency tasked with providing cancer services to the people of Manitoba. CCMB is responsible for providing care, treatment and support across the entire cancer service spectrum - from prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and care, and palliation or end of life care.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: People who love this role are self-starters that can work independently. They enjoy being on their feet and have a calm, positive attitude. They also love a morning shift, 8am to 12pm, and can commit to at least 6 months. The duties include maintaining the refreshment program, providing patient guide services, and assisting with paperwork assembly. Other duties include helping people with hair loss choose wig and headwear styles.
Skills Required: - Multi-tasking, time management.
- Can work independently.
- Walking, standing, lifting (no more than 5 lbs).
- Comfortable in a hospital environment.
- Excellent listening skills, ability to communicate well in English. French is an asset.
- Excellent reading and writing skills.
- Must be comfortable learning new information about CancerCare programs, then communicate that to patients.
- Experience with wigs or hair styling an asset though it's not required.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: This is an excellent role for people retired teachers, health care professionals, or people in the hospitality industry.
Volunteers report that they gain an immense sense of satisfaction knowing that they've made the day brighter for patients with cancer. Other skills gained are people skills, organization skills, and time management skills.

Time Commitment: Daytime
8:00am to 12:00pm, currently looking for a permanent Friday volunteer.
