Organizational Description: Westman Aphasia Inc. (WAI) is a non-profit charitable organization that works to address the needs of individuals who live with a chronic communication disorder known as aphasia, and their caregivers, family, friends, and health care providers. WAI helps persons with aphasia and those around them by providing support services and public education to improve their quality of life. These programs and services are the only ones of their kind offered in Canada west of Toronto On. WAI is led by a volunteer Board of Directors.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Our volunteer opportunities include helping with our monthly program groups (typically the third Tuesday afternoon of each month excluding July and August), and/or joining our Board of Directors (meet evenings about every six weeks excluding July and August). Volunteers will also be asked to provide information on behalf of WAI at various events (eg. volunteer fairs, workshops, community events, etc.) a few times annually to help increase community awareness and education about aphasia.
Skills Required: - must enjoy working with people, especially those who live with a communication disorder that impairs their ability to speak, read, write, and understand, and their caregivers, family and friends
- must enjoy working with seniors
- must attend a full day aphasia workshop at their own cost (workshop fee will be reimbursed to volunteer after one consecutive year of volunteer commitment)
- all volunteers will be interviewed by WAI's program clinician(s) and/or volunteer coordinator
- all volunteers must be willing to undergo to a Criminal Record Check, an Adult/Elder Abuse Registry Check, and a Vulnerable Persons Record Check, possibly at their own cost
- to volunteer on our Board or Directors, financial, communication, marketing, policy development, etc., skills would be an asset but are not required

Our monthly program groups are usually held the third Tuesday of each month from about 12 noon until 4 pm; our Board of Directors meets about every six weeks, usually a Thursday evening from 5 pm to 7 pm; other events could be during a lunch hour or Saturday, hours may vary depending on the specific event
