Organizational Description: The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of Manitoba (APEGM) was established on March 27, 1920 by The Engineering and Geoscientific Professions Act to regulate the profession of engineering in Manitoba. In 1998 the Manitoba Legislature expanded the association's mandate to regulate professional geoscientists in Manitoba.
The purposes of the association are to:Govern and regulate the practice of professional engineering and professional geoscience in Manitoba
Promote and increase, by all lawful means and in the public interest, the knowledge, skill, and competency of its members and students in all things relating to the professions of engineering and geoscience
Advocate where the public interest is at risk
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The Discipline Committee is considered a committee of Council and is made up of registered professionals from all engineering and geoscience disciplines, as well as lay members (public representatives).

The Discipline Committee hears charges of professional misconduct against professional engineers and geoscientists.

With the assistance of legal counsel and two professional members, as a Lay Member, you will hear arguments for and against a finding of professional misconduct, and will provide a written decision on the case at hand.
Skills Required: - Demonstrated ability to weigh arguments equally and fairly in a contested situation
- Some knowledge of the judicial process
- Be available for meetings
- Provide input to the committee
- Must not ever have been a member of the Association

Time Commitment: Daytime
There is on average one hearing per year. Most hearings take a half day, but in some cases may take multiple days.
