Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Support the Sports Program Coordinator in the supervision of participants at practices and games
Coach and engage youth during programming, including active participation in camps and clinics
Communicate with participants & families to ensure practice & game schedules are kept
Assist staff with the management & maintenance of program equipment and resources
At all times serve as a positive role model for youth promoting teamwork, community-building and personal/social skill development, in addition to sport specific development.
Attend coaches meetings and clinics hosted by the WMBA
Skills Required: Current Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Checks
Required to complete the online Respect In Sport Course
Enthusiastic, welcoming, respectful with a positive attitude
Experience working with children/youth or experience coaching sports teams is an asset but not required
Knowledge and/or experience working with marginalized populations is an asset
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Volunteers will gain valuable experience working with diverse, at-risk youth. Volunteers who demonstrate dedication, reliability and leadership skills may, upon request, receive character references from the Sports Program Coordinator for commitments lasting longer than 3 months. Volunteers will also have access to scheduled training opportunities. In addition, volunteers have the opportunity to take paid casual work as van drivers for the basketball program if they possess a Class 4 Licence.
Age: 17 and under
Time Commitment: Evening, Weekend
Location: Practices held early October until Mid-March at gyms in Winnipeg's West End; Games will be held late October until Mid March at various locations. Time Commitment: Seeking volunteers to commit to 1 practice Monday-Friday and 1-2 Games Saturday or Sunday
