Organizational Description: The primary objective of the BSRC is to increase wellness of the 55+ population by providing information, education, and referral services. Services such as these will support the individual needs of each person, which may include emotional, spiritual, social and/or practical support. These services will enable persons aged 55+ to remain in independent living situations for as long as possible.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Volunteer Driver provides rides for older adults in the West Central area of Winnipeg to medical appointments. The Volunteer Driver may be requested to provide escort assistance. Gas parking costs, and wear and tear on the volunteers vehicle will be compensated.
Skills Required: All volunteer drivers must be at least 18 years of age and have a good driving record, safe vehicle, and a desire to work with older adults. A police record check is required, because of the vulnerability of the people we serve. In order to complete this, applicants must be a resident of Canada for a minimum of 12 months.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Volunteer Drivers will build interpersonal skills while assisting older adults. Driving skills will also be gained. Communication and organizational skills will also be gained.
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime
The position of Volunteer Driver is casual. The Seniors Resource Coordinator will call or email when a ride request is taken. If the volunteer driver is available to provide the ride, they let the Coordinator know. Rides for the program are only scheduled on weekdays during business hours. Must provide at least 3 months of service to have Criminal Record Check and Abuse Registry check compensated.
