To provide social rehabilitation programs to indigenous people that are homeless or hard-to-employ by providing them with culturally appropriate health and wellness programs, life skills and work experiences.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Event helper for Indigenous Pow Wow and Multicultural Gathering, Thursday June 27th, 5pm to 8pm, at the Turtle Island Neighbourhood Centre, 510 King Street. Event is a multi-cultural exchange of song and dance, supported by the not-for-profit White Buffalo Spiritual Society, and funded by Heritage Canada, and the Province of Manitoba Sports, Culture and Heritage. Helper needed for the following categories:

Leadership Rolls (all leadership rolls will have helpers):

1. Receive all pow wow dancer registrations by email prior to event (we would set up a specific email for you, and forward you registrations), record their info on spreadsheet, and pay them at the event, and lead a team to sign in pow wow dancers.

2. Lead a kitchen team: Order the food, buy food supplies prior to event, pay the food suppliers at event, lead a team of kitchen helpers which involves table set up and food distribution and clean up.

3. Design and print a program for the event. Prepare table signs for the event and put them up at the event. Lead a team to decorate the event with Celebrate Canada items, and distribute those items to people (flags, colouring books etc.) Decorate the stage (sage, cedar, sweet grass, flags, star blankets etc.

4. Lead a team during the event, to sign in the multicultural performers and pay them, supervise the green room (where performers chill out and eat and prepare), be the contact person/in-between person for the MC and performers, or support the person who chooses that roll.

5. Create a feedback form for attendees and performers to fill out. And lead a team to get the forms filled out at the event.

Non-Leadership Helper Rolls:

6. Help out a leader in any of the above named tasks during the event.

7. Help out during event for stage and sound set up and take down.

8. Help out during event for tent, table and chair set up and take down.

9. Hep out during event for garbage and recycling set up, pick up, and take down.
Skills Required: Please choose a category of helping that suits your skill set and personal interest. We can discuss more details if interested.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: If choosing a leadership roll, will gain experience in whichever roll you choose. Leadership rolls will be able to get a letter of reference. Honorariums are available for all helpers. Amount will be determined closer to the date of event.
Age: 17 and under, 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening
If choosing a leadership roll, you can determine your own working hours prior to event. If choosing a non-leadership roll, hours will be during the event which are: Thursday, June 27th, 2019, from 3:30pm to 9:30pm. The event takes place 5pm to 8pm. But there will be time needed before and after for set and take down.
