Organizational Description: We are a non-for-profit, community-based organization with ambition to assist individuals whom are 65+, disabled or convalescing to maintain their independent living status in our community. All of our programs are provided throughout the combined efforts of fee-for-service workers, Support Services staff and dedicated volunteers, whom are the pillars on which our organization is founded.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Without the stimulation that social interaction and friendship provide, an isolated elder can experience poor physical and emotion well being. Visits or phone calls from our friendly volunteers can make a big difference in a senior's quality of life. Volunteer visitors can visit weekly or biweekly on a mutually agreed upon schedule. Volunteer visitors may visit in home or in the community. (e.g. coffee shop) Phone Pals have regularly scheduled weekly or bi-weekly phone visits. Orientation and ongoing support is provided; volunteers are integral to our team. We match volunteers and clients according to interests to ensure a good fit.
Skills Required: Friendly, outgoing, compassionate, knowledge of the aging process, patience and flexibility. Must be dependable and punctual. We ask for a minimum 6 month commitment.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: This is a great opportunity for people to enhance their communication skills, and to be able to work with seniors in a casual setting. The flexible schedule can suit students, those working, semi-retired or retired. Family volunteering is encouraged.
