Organizational Description: MTS Super-Spike is a combination of Western Canada's biggest beach/outdoor volleyball tournament, mixed in with a two day outdoor concert series, all set in a festival atmosphere. No other festival is like it, and it has truly become one of Manitoba's most anticipated weekends each summer. 2018 will mark the 17th anniversary for Super-Spike, and plans are in the works to make it the biggest and best event to date! New this year is an additional beach court and Ultimate Frisbee! Best part yet, Super-Spike is a not-for-profit charitable event with every dollar raised going to support local charities (True North Youth Foundation, KidSport, and Volleyball Manitoba)!
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Beer Tent - Bar Back

Want to keep busy, handle alcohol and keep the party going? You'll want to be a Bar Back!

Duties include keeping the bar stocked with a healthy supply of alcohol and mix. This is a fast-paced position that is perfect for those who love being involved.

You will need to stand and walk for your entire shift, and will need to be able to lift at least 20 pounds. Serve it Safe (previously known as It's Good Business) certification is preferred but not required.

Beer Tent - Bartender

Want to be at the centre of the fun at MTS Super Spike? You'll want to be a Bartender!

Duties include checking IDs, serving alcohol to participants and attendees in a fast-paced environment and maintaining the bar space and supplies.

You will need to stand and walk for your entire shift, and will need to be able to lift at least 10 pounds. Must be Serve it Safe (previously known as It's Good Business) certified.

Cleanup Crew

Want to protect the environment and help keep Maple Grove clean? You'll want to help out with the Clean-Up Crew.

We gather up our beer-cans to return for charity fundraising: all proceeds from the can return are donated to charity.

Duties include collecting and sorting cans as well as bagging cans for deposit. You will need to be standing and walking for your entire shift.

Drink Ticket Sales

Want to check IDs and help thirsty people get drinks? You'll want to be a Ticket Seller!

Duties include selling tickets for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and ensuring everyone purchasing tickets has a wristband.

You will need to stay at the table for your entire shift. You will need to handle cash and be able to check IDs. Mental-math and customer service skills are required.

Front Gate

Like to be involved with crowd control and checking IDs? You'll want to work at Front Gate!

Duties include taking tickets, checking IDs, handling cash and checking off pre-ordered lists.

You will need to be able to stand for most of your shift. You will need to handle cash. Mental math and customer service skills are required.

Stage Crew/Merchandise Sales

Want to help make the show happen? Want to promote the bands and help fans get cool shwag? You'll want to volunteer as Stage Crew and Merchandise Sales.

Duties include assisting with stage and merchandise set-up and tear-down. You will need to be standing and walking periodically throughout the weekend and will need to be able to lift 30 pounds. You will also be merchandising, restocking and selling band merchandise.

This is a small crew of dedicated individuals who will be working all weekend. You will have intermittent work throughout the weekend, but you'll be needed to be available all weekend long. Mental math, cash handling and customer service skills are required.

Tournament Administration

Like sports, charts and information? You'll want to work in Tournament Administration.

Duties include assisting with tracking of scores, tracking of tournament details, time keeping needs, and providing schedule information to participants.

You will be out in the sun all day. Mental math and customer service skills are required.

Venue Setup/Take Down

Want to help get Maple Grove Rugby Park ready for MTS Super Spike and help return it to its former state afterwards? You'll want to be part of Set-Up/Take Down!

Duties include assisting with the set-up of the beer tent and volleyball courts. You'll get your volunteer hours in before and after the event, so you have Friday and Saturday free to enjoy the event.

You will need to volunteer for both Thursday and Sunday for at least 10 hours over the two days. You will be doing physical labour for both shifts, and will need to lift at least 30 pounds
Skills Required: Roles require different needs; some require lifting, and standing or walking for full shift, others involve mental math skills, customer service and handling cash. Please see the job descriptions for specific details.

Shifts are 5 hours each, and every volunteer is required to work at least 2 shifts over the weekend. There are shifts on Thursday afternoon and Friday daytime for set-up, Friday evening and Saturday morning, afternoon and evening at the event, and Sunday for tear-down.
