WRHA Volunteer Services coordinates volunteer placements in Community Health and Corporate programs as well as the Breast Health Centre and Pan Am Clinic.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The Community Host acts as a community liaison to enhance the quality of care and service for clients and visitors at Access Downtown by providing information, directions and helpful assistance in a welcoming, inclusive and culturally safe manner.
Duties consist of:
1) Greet/welcome clients and visitors upon arrival at the Access Centre.
2) Provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere to every person that comes into the Access Centre
3) Provide directions and/or escort clients and public that require help to different programs/services located at the site, including directing individuals attending meetings, workshops, etc.
4) Seek out appropriate information and provide general information and answer basic questions about the clinics and services offered at the site.
5) Provide information on resources and services in the surrounding area.
6) As necessary, check in on clients for those waiting longer periods for appointments.
7) Identify individuals in need of assistance or care to Primary Care staff.
8) As necessary, check in with visitors using area as drop in.
o Assist with computer and phone use
o Assist with access to harm reduction supplies
9)Assist with crowd control and communicating wait times to clients as needed under the direction of the staff or security.
10) In the event of a code / incident, follow direction from the Disturbance Response Team (DRT)/ Security and provide reassurance to visitors as needed
11) Maintain and organize resources and pamphlets in lobby/waiting area
12) Distribute and/or conduct client surveys as required
Skills Required: 1) Preference will be given to community members living in the area.
2) Excellent customer service skills
3) Ability to work with trauma impacted populations is an asset
4) Respectful of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds of clients and their family members.
5) Awareness of harm reduction principles is an asset
6) Friendly personality and a genuine interest in helping others.
7) Ability to understand, take and give directions and express oneself in English in a clear, concise manner.
8) Physically able to stand for extended periods of time, walk distances and provide clients with wheelchairs as needed. Assist with pushing wheelchairs and/or other transfer aides without direct contact with client.
9) Conscientious, organized and attention to detail.
10) Ability to respect the WRHA policies on confidentiality and dress code.

Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime
One shift once a week for a minimum of 3 months. Shifts are Monday to Friday from 11:00am to 3:00pm at Access Downtown, 640 Main Street.
