Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: To provide support, consistent with the OCDC code of conduct guidelines, including:
- Familiarizing oneself on OCD and proven treatment methods
- Discussing various treatment methods within support group setting
- Providing follow-up material for participants based on questions and discussions that arise during meetings
- Planning and preparing exercises and topics for the group
- Attending training sessions provided through OCDC
Skills Required: - Persons with lived experience who have personal (or family) understanding and experience living with and/or treating OCD or Hoarding Disorder or anxiety disorder
- Experience working in mental health, in individual and/or group therapies and supports
- Demonstrated ability to relate with sensitivity to participants dealing with mental illness
- Post-secondary education in related field (psychology, social work, sociology), appreciated but not required
- Students in the field of psychology with interest and knowledge on OCD and/or anxiety disorders and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), appreciated but not required
- French as an additional language is an asset
- Graduate students with education and training looking to get some hands on experience, appreciated but not required
- Demonstrated communication and time management skills

CODI - Co-occurring Disorders Initiative Training
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Our peer support groups help individuals and their families to achieve and maintain OCD and Hoarding Disorder recoveries. Meeting with and listening to others who have similar OCD and Hoarding Disorder experiences allows for open discussion of feelings, a view of different perspectives and a sharing of coping suggestions. Individuals can attend on a regular basis and new people are welcome each month. These monthly meetings offer an opportunity to listen and to talk in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.

As a Peer Support Group Facilitator you will gain overall experience for related careers in social work, psychology, or psychiatry, by acquiring valuable skills (such as):
* support group setting facilitation and engaging dialogue
* familiarity with OCD treatment methods
* planning topics for group therapies
Age: 18-30, 31-54
Time Commitment: Evening
Evenings from 6:00 PM to no later than 9:00 PM on 1st or 2nd or 3rd or 4th Tuesday of every month dependent on Support Group. Please note: Support Groups are held from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM and as Facilitator you would arrive at approximately 6:00PM and leave shortly after 8:30 PM.
