Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The Volunteer Educator position supports the WHS In Your School program. The goal is to educate youth on pet empathy, safety, and welfare.

The WHS In Your School program involves; a description of the work done by the WHS, a curriculum linked presentation, an activity to complete with the group, and often times a supervised animal interaction. Animal interactions will generally be paired with a WHS Dog Ambassador.

Presentations last for 30 minutes for grades K & 1 and 45 min - 1 hr for Grades 2 - 12.

Duties and Responsibilities:
-Model, to children, appropriate approaches to and handling of pets.
-Integrate "teachable moments" into the presentations.
-Bring the energy & enthusiasm to every presentation to ensure every customer has an unforgettable experience.
-Maintain appropriate routines and systems.
-Notify the education manager of any concerns/ questions promptly.
-Share responsibility for maintaining effective communication within the education team.
-Maintain safety of children and pets at all times.
Skills Required: -A well-projected voice with the ability to speak in front of groups.
-Enthusiastic individual.
-Excellent communication skills with the capability to talk to people of all ages.
-Knowledge and understanding of animal care and related welfare issues.
-Teaching background and/or experience is helpful.
- Keen interest working with children or youth.
- Must provide a clear criminal background / child abuse reference check.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Great opportunity for university Education students; skills developed include public speaking and interaction with students in a classroom setting.

Offer an Educators training this winter to equip our volunteers with the skill necessary to be able to assist in our education bookings. Must go through interview, orientation, and completing both a CRC and CARC covered by the WHS. %u2022Day time availability is required and we do have opportunities to work with your own dog, (must pass a behaviour assessment)
