Organizational Description: | Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council Inc. (MIIC) is Manitoba's largest refugee settlement agency. Through the agency's Settlement and Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) and its Educational and Community Services Division, MIIC staff work with multicultural, multi-linguistic and multi-faith communities in Manitoba to support Government Assisted Refugees (GARs), Privately Sponsored Refugees (PSRs) and other newcomers. |

Volunteer Opportunity Details | |
Description of Duties: | The Volunteer Matching Program matches newly arrived refugees with Canadians who volunteer to provide friendship in the form of emotional and social support to refugees during the time they are adjusting and adapting to a new life in Canada. This friendship will help refugees to integrate and understand the culture and values in their new country. The goal of this program is to ease the transition for refugees and to provide family time between volunteers and refugees. |
Skills Required: | To be an English speaker lives in Winnipeg or around the city and able to establish a friendship with refugees. Additional languages like Arabic, Kurdish, Somali, Amharic and other African languages would be an asset. |
Skills Gained/Related Careers: | Volunteers will gain greater understanding of Canadian's diverse culture. |
Age: | 18-30, 31-54, 55+ |
Time Commitment: | The time commitment is up to volunteer's availability as long as they can meet with their refugee friends at least once a week. Our program is also open to Video calls due to recent COVID guidelines. |
