Organizational Description: CancerCare Manitoba is the provincially mandated cancer agency tasked with providing cancer services to the people of Manitoba. CCMB is responsible for providing care, treatment and support across the entire cancer service spectrum - from prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and care, and palliation or end of life care.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: CancerCare Manitoba has a program called the Guardian Angel Caring Room where patients can obtain assistance with appearance-related side effects of cancer such as hair loss.
Volunteers assist patients in choosing a wig, headwear, or both.
Skills Required: Basic computer skills such as Microsoft Excel and Outlook are required.
Strong listening skills are required. Empathy, compassion, and diplomacy are also required.
Volunteers should be able to learn new information and pass that on to patients accurately and effectively.
Public speaking and leadership skills are an asset.
Former patients and family welcome to apply if 1 year has passed since the last treatment.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Feedback from current volunteers shows a great level of personal satisfaction knowing that their contribution has helped ease the burden that patients feel.
Customer service/public service skills gained.
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime
Two shifts available Monday to Friday during the day: either 9:00am to 12:00pm, or 12:00 to 3:00pm. Minimum 6 month commitment required. Regular volunteers must commit to 1 day per week, casual volunteers must commit to 4 shifts per month.
