Description of Duties: ***If you need this position description in an alternative format, please contact us at 204.258.7048***

Position Summary: The Hospital Companion Volunteer promotes the spirit of the Mission and Philosophy of St.Amant, and the goals and objectives of providing the care, health and wellbeing of people supported by St.Amant. HCVs will provide one-on-one time with patients during their hospital stay. As a volunteer you may read, talk, play games, provide companionship or just offering a quiet presence.

At no point is a HCV to provide clinical care, or take on tasks that are the main duty of a paid worker. The aim of the role is to enhance the patient experience and make their time in hospital as comfortable as possible. Compassion, understanding and empathy are integral qualities for a HCV. A HCV must be able to anticipate and recognize patient needs, providing a safe and comfortable care environment. A HCV should project positive energy and emotional support.

The HCV will focus on providing a companion visitor role and will not be expected or asked to be involved with any medical/medication/care decisions. The HCV should not undertake any activities involving personal care, nutritional intake, toileting, or lifting and transferring. The HCV will want to be supportive and mindful of ensuring that under any circumstances, will not provide any medical information or counseling to the patient or family member. The HCV should never give any type of medication and if the HCV sees a need for a referral this should be discussed with the St.Amant Support Staff only.

All volunteer placements are done through the volunteer office including reassignments. Volunteering is an exciting and challenging experience. Volunteers are highly valued members of the St.Amant team and contribute to each program area. If you're a first-time volunteer or just new to St.Amant's volunteer system, you may have some questions. And we have answers! http://stamant.ca/volunteering/volunteer-faq/
