Organizational Description: Knowles Centre is a community-based, nonprofit social service agency for children, adolescents and young adults facing difficult times in their lives. It began as a home for boys in 1907, and today, provides group care treatment, treatment foster care, independent living, day treatment and sexual abuse treatment programs plus a range of support services to young people from Manitoba and other communities throughout Canada.

We offer a range of therapeutic and skills-based programs that help young people and their families to address past struggles, to develop healthier relationships and ways of life, and to reach their full potential in the future.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: As a member of the Board of Directors, members:
- Perform all duties in keeping with the by-laws of the organization, internal policies, and relevant Provincial legislation and regulations
- Hire and work with CEO, including complete biennial performance review
- Option to be a member of board committees (Executive, Finance, Nominating, and Fundraising)
- Provide financial overview
- Review and approve policy
- Contribute professional knowledge to program review and agency development
- Support agency in our quadrennial COA accreditation process
Skills Required: At present, our greatest need is for professionals with expertise in marketing and communications; fundraising; human resources, or corporate/labour law. Ideally, the right candidate will have knowledge or strong interest in the challenges facing youth and families involved with the social services system. The right candidate will be joining our current board, that is reliable, focused, and respectful.
Indigenous candidates and residents of the northeast Winnipeg community are especially encouraged to apply.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Board members gain the following from their involvement:
- Increase knowledge in matters related to child welfare
- Insight into the management of a non-profit organization
- Contribute to community well-being
- Network with like-minded professionals
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Evening
- Participate in monthly meetings of the full Board of Directors (held Oct. through Nov. and Jan. through June). - Attend the annual general meeting (held in September) - Committee members may meet as required, in person or via telephone or video conferencing - Represent the agency, as required, in meetings with stakeholders such as the Province of Manitoba, River East Transcona School Division, and the United Way of Winnipeg - Support the fundraising efforts of the agency at a level commensurate with the role, but within the means of the individual board member
