Organizational Description: The Young Parents Movement of Winnipeg is an advocacy group for adolescent/youth parents. YPMW focuses on the stigma of teenage pregnancy, adolescent parenting, and youth parents. Parents who are usually marginalized into these discriminatory groups solely because they are comparing their age to their parenting skills. The objective of this community is to end this stigma of calling parents who under the age of 25, an epidemic, abomination or outbreak. It is where parents can go to feel safe, understood and non-judged. Young parents need somewhere to turn too. Usually they feel alone. With only some family members/friends, doctors, social workers or child and family services to turn too, they often feel withdrawn, alone and unheard. We all need each other. If youth parents had the right resources, help, someone advocating for them, perhaps there will be less of a stigma towards teenage pregnancy and parenting. Sometimes youth parents feel ashamed to admit they need help. In fear that it will lessen their parenting, show people they are not capable of having a child or worse. We are here to tell you, that this is not true. You are not alone. You are capable. What you are doing is enough.
This is not just for teenaged mothers. Teenaged fathers need to be noticed and helped as well.
In our society, there are many young, single mothers. Perhaps, if the young fathers had somewhere to turn to as well, somewhere where they could get help, and resources from a safe place. Maybe this will lessen the impact of single mothers. YPM believes that young parents need a safe place to go.
This Facebook page will be where parents can interact with one another, find resources (housing, supplements, school info, job info and more), message the page for advice, or just to find leisure and guidance at.
We are parents. We need to unite.
