Organizational Description: Established as a community project and social service of Thrive aims to empower families and individuals by providing volunteer opportunities where individuals can learn employment, social and life skills and gain work experience! We work with newcomers, individuals overcoming mental health crisis as well as volunteers from various programs including disability programs,work experience programs, the Fine Options program, and volunteers doing court-mandated community service.

Volunteers gain employment references, fulfill mandated court orders, obtain volunteer reward benefits from EIA, interact with the community and so much more. Our awesome volunteers help to support community needs and by doing this we can offer a valuable service by providing affordable clothing, toys, linens & household items. All of the proceeds benefit the programs at the Resource Centre.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Sorters work in the warehouse, and are responsible for ensuring that all toy items that end up in the store are suitable for sale. While the work is mostly "behind the scenes", you are essential to the store in that you ensure that we have a steady stream of good quality toy items available for customers.
Skills Required: Duties include:
- Sort donated toy items for pricing, moving each item to the correct area of the warehouse.
- Ensuring correct number of pieces of games are in each game or set.
- Clean items to ensure proper displaying.
- Check each item to ensure that it is safe and suitable for sale in the store. Ensure that items to be sold are clean, safe and in good condition. Make decisions about what items should be sold, passed on, or thrown away.
- Store seasonal items in the correct locations until the proper seasons.

Other tasks:
- Bring in new donations, enforcing store policies on what donations are and are not accepted and thanking donors appropriately.
- Consult with other volunteers or the Coordinator if unsure about the suitability of an item for sale, or about the prices of exceptional items.
- Clean the work area at the end of the shift.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: - Able to move boxes and bags of donations and to do light physical work.
- Reliable in coming for scheduled shifts, or phoning in advance if unavailable or sick.
- Able to distinguish items that are in good condition from items that are not. Able to pay close attention to detail.
- Able to work well both independently and as part of a team. Able to accept supervision and direction.
- Able to understand and follow directions in English.
- Willing to work with others who are from diverse backgrounds.
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime, Weekend
Shifts are typically three hours long, but we are very flexible. Shifts are available in the mornings and afternoons, Monday to Saturday. This position is sometimes available as a short-term or group opportunity.
