Organizational Description: The Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety (MIPS) is a not-for-profit charitable organization who works with the public, healthcare providers and leaders to promote patient safety in Manitoba.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The goal of volunteer activities in our organization is to educate & inform the public about patient safety, and how to advocate for self and others for safe care in the health system. Activities include:

- Host information booths at conferences and workshops, primarily for the public
* Speak to attendees; initiating conversation, encouraging and answering questions
* Transport equipment and resources to various locations, and setting up display
* Exhibits may vary in length from ½ to all day

- Presentations with groups and organizations
* Provide presentations with pre-prepared Powerpoint slides on specific topics
* Speak to attendees; initiating conversation, encouraging and answering questions
* Transport equipment and resources to various locations
* Presentations last approximately 1 hour

On occasion, share the patient safety perspective in other public opportunities.
Skills Required: - Ability to engage with the public, healthcare professionals and educators in a sensitive and respectful manner
- Comfort in speaking to groups and leading group discussions or willingness to learn
- Work independently
- Ability to transport materials at minimum 20 lbs, and has reliable mobility
- Some knowledge of audio visual equipment
- Access to a vehicle and able to drive. Can drive to surrounding areas.
- Fluent in English. Also looking for fluent bi-lingual French volunteers.
- Strength in leadership, interpersonal relations and conflict resolution would be an asset

- Available days, weekends or evenings - Commitment to hosting information booths a minimum of 3/year and to do 4 presentation/ year - Hosting information booths could be 1/2 day to full day or 3-4 hours in evening - Presentations could be up to 2 hours
