Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The main purpose of the ParentChild+ Program is to strengthen the relationship between parent and child and to support the parent in their role as their child's first and most important teacher. It is a two-year program that begins when the child is 18 to 36 months. A trained volunteer, called a Home Visitor, goes into the family's home for a half hour, twice a week, for 23 weeks between the months of October and April. Ideally, the same Home Visitor remains with the family for two years. Each week, the Home Visitor brings a different book or toy and models for the parent by playing, talking and reading with the parent and child.
Skills Required: Home Visitors are required to enjoy interacting with families and, in particular, young children, to have 3-4 hours of free time per week between the months of October and April, to adhere to program policies and procedures including some record-keeping and to abide by an oath of confidentiality.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Home Visitors have an opportunity to expand or develop their skills with families, to meet a variety of new people and to gain personal satisfaction from making a contribution to their community. Related careers would include health care, social services, teaching and child care.
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening
The ParentChild+ Program begins with a 2 day training session in early October. After the training is completed, Home Visitors are matched with a family and begin their bi-weekly visits from October till April.
