Maintaining a Charity's Legal Status
From NotForProfitsCanada.com
A Canadian registered charity MUST meet other requirements than those specifically mandated by Revenue Canada. They include provincial or territorial requirements, industrial requirements, and gaming or fundraising rules and regulations, not specified or necessarily enforced nationwide.
In part, there may be provincial, territorial, or municipal annual returns and/or fees to be paid as a charity. Even as a federal charity, these would be applicable. Your charity must stay aware of obligations to provincial and municipal authorities.
Changes to the charity's name, address, directors, bylaws, and the like that REQUIRE reporting to Revenue Canada likely ALSO require reporting to appropriate provincial/territorial/municipal charity regulating bodies. It is NOT sufficient to just make these changes with Revenue Canada.
Fundraising activities may require municipal permits for those actively soliciting funds for the charity, particularly if they are being solicited from the general public and/or in public places. There may be restrictions on where, when, and how fund raising activities may be conducted in some cities and municipalities.
In the same vein, games of chance, ticket raffles, and the like do fall under gaming laws in many provinces and municipalities, meaning they are regulated and holding an event, even though strictly for charity, without obtaining the proper licenses and permissions, could become a legal issue that would put the charity in a very bad light, if not worse.
Property gifted to the charity may have to be reported, registered, or restricted in its use and disposition. Again, check with provincial, territorial and/or municipal authorities for specific information.
As well, directors and trustees may have specific requirements and obligations that are in addition to those on the federal level.
Simply, the advice here is that it isn't enough or sufficient to report and comply with Revenue Canada's rules. Make sure your charity takes the extra steps to learn about and comply with the rules on all levels of government and in all types of regulation situations, so you are always on the right side of the law, and are an exemplary organizational citizen of your local community.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
CBC Volunteer Promotion
CBC's Weekend Morning Show is ready to put a 'call out for volunteers' for your organization's particular volunteering needs. We can help your organization tell its story through a volunteer opportunity that CBC listeners can roll up their sleeves and pitch in with.
Ideally these opportunities would be on Saturday morning and would be 'family friendly'. So if your organization needs their community centre/organization painted, a floor laid, junk taken out of that basement storage area, paths cleared of brush, really any task that might require 5 - 50 people on a particular day for a particular duration, we want to know about it. We'll want to hear about why volunteering with your organization makes a difference to someone's life or lives.
If you have any event that you will need volunteers for before March 31, 2010, please call Karen Schlichting at 772-9610 or email kschlichting@mts.net.

We invite your community to participate in this year’s Manitoba Communities in Bloom program. All sectors of your community will be inspired to enhance community appearance, environmental efforts and awareness and to showcase your heritage.
Many Manitoba communities have participated in the Communities in Bloom program and together we are making Manitoba a better place to live and a more desirable destination to visit.
