Volunteer
Recognition - Celebrate Accomplishments, Not Just
Time
by:
Tracy Douglass, Community Outreach Coordinator, Volunteer
Manitoba
Volunteer
recognition
can no longer be considered a once a year event. Listening
to international volunteerism expert, Linda Graff,
plus analyzing the latest Canadian Survey of Giving,
Volunteering, and Participating, it is clear that
volunteers will no longer be with an organization
for years and years. Because of time pressures, Boomers,
Gen Xers and Gen Y's are becoming more attracted to
episodic volunteering.
What does this mean? Volunteer projects will be in
demand. Opportunities to volunteer for a specific
period of time to accomplish a specific goal will
need to be created. That also means that your recognition
practices must adapt so that you are recognizing accomplishments
rather than the amount of volunteer time.
Length of service pins and certificates are not usually
appropriate recognition practices for these volunteers.
Timely and personal recognition will be much more
motivating. Plus, you will need to tie your recognition
to the accomplishment of a goal or the successful
completion of a project so that they know that their
effort is being appreciated.
Volunteer Manitoba's Volunteer Awards are completely
focused on the accomplishments of volunteers. When
you read stories of past recipients of these awards,
you will see that the length of volunteer time is
not as important as the outcome.
We invite you to attend this year's Awards Dinner
to celebrate the accomplishments of Manitoba's volunteers.

Board Members? - What You Need To Tell Them
The information you share with a prospective board
member has a significant impact on how successful
this person will be on your board. This potential
board member needs information in order to make an
informed decision that's right for both of you. Plus,
sharing key information will make this person's transition
onto the board much smoother. Find out what you need
to tell potential board members before they say "Yes".

SPECIAL
ANNOUNCEMENT
VM
Partners with Manitoba Community Services Council
to Deliver Affordable Training
Throughout Manitoba
Volunteer
Manitoba has recently received additional funding
support to provide rural workshops, manuals and presentation
materials for volunteers and voluntary organizations
throughout Manitoba.
Denice Girdner, Volunteer Manitoba's Training Manager
is very pleased with this funding support. "It
is anticipated that as a result of MCSC's sponsorship
of rural capacity building workshops utilizing VM's
expertise, that it will generate increased accessibility
to training opportunities to rural Manitobans. Also
as a result of this sponsorship, workshop materials
will be revised to create documents with rural content
and relevancy."
Catherine Roberts, Executive Director of MCSC says,
"The goal of this partnership with Volunteer
Manitoba is to enhance the delivery of workshops for
volunteers. The intent is to provide opportunities
for organizations or volunteers in rural Manitoba
with restricted resources, to participate in professional
development opportunities that they are unable to
do so currently within their budget."
Workshops will be offered in 2008 in all 6 regions
across Rural Manitoba. The following schedule has
been developed so far:
Encouraging Community Involvement - Stonewall, April
