Professional Development Funding
By Erik Butenschon, with excerpt from www.wpgfdn.org
Did you know that the Winnipeg Foundation can help your organization with professional development and capacity building?
Often, finding smaller amounts of funds for nonprofit organizations to use towards professional development can be a challenge. Smaller nonprofit organizations are forced to come up with creative ways to deal with a lack of professional development funds. In many instances partnerships and collaborations with other nonprofits are the best way to get around this.
However, among the wide range of categories the Winnipeg Foundation will support are “Professional Development” and “Organizational Development and Capacity Building”.
From the Winnipeg Foundation’s website:
Organizational Development and Capacity Building
The Board of Directors of The Winnipeg Foundation has mandated a grant making strategy that supports organizations in developing their internal capacity to achieve strong governance, stable infrastructures, clear strategic direction, and financial stability.
Organizational development and capacity building grants fall into several categories:
Technical Assistance – The Foundation supports initiatives that help the board and staff of an organization to better lead, manage and direct their organization. This can include projects such as board development; strategic planning (business plans, fund development strategies, marketing plans, etc.); and evaluations. The key factor in this type of project is that board and/or staff members are actively involved in the process.
Implementation – The Foundation assists organizations to implement their strategies and plans for building or strengthening their internal capacity. This can include projects such as supporting management development, especially through internships; increasing human resources through transition phases; and interim or short-term operating funding.
Endowment Building - The Foundation encourages and promotes the building of endowment funds for organizations as a key to organizational sustainability. For more information about establishing an Agency Endowment Fund, and The Winnipeg Foundation’s matching programs, click here.
Organizations wishing to apply for support for organizational development and capacity building can apply through the Community Grants application process. To discuss the details of your project, please contact a member of our Community Grants staff at 944.9474 or click here to email.
Professional Development
Limited funds are available for professional development activities that enhance the skills of staff, board, and/or volunteers of charitable organizations.
Grants for professional development activities range from $250 to $1,000, and can include registration fees, travel, accommodation, and general expenses to attend conferences, as well as course fees for workshops or other professional development activities.
Requests are accepted on a continuous basis, and a formal application is not required. To apply for professional development funding, submit a letter that includes a brief description of the conference or workshop, how the professional development activity will strengthen your organization, and a budget. Letters can be directed to:
