What
Happens After Winning a Volunteer Manitoba Volunteer
Award.
by:
Tracy Douglass, Community Outreach Coordinator, Volunteer
Manitoba
Have
you been considering nominating a special volunteer
or group or business for one of Volunteer Manitoba's
awards? Have you ever wondered if the work of putting
the information together is worth it? Here are two
perspectives of what happens after an award is won
to help you decide.
Lindsay Dandeneau nominated the Youth Community Partnership
(YCP) volunteers from Gimli and this is what she says
about the experience.
She said that after the group won the award there
was tons of media coverage
in the local media. This group was a fairly new group
and winning the award helped in so many ways; it was
a very positive experience. It helped the group members
realize that what they are doing is important and
could potentially be something that could be transferred
to other communities. It helped them move the group's
goals forward since they have better credibility.
They have a better chance to receive funding grants
and are now represented on the Town Council. Lastly,
their group now has the respect of their peers in
school which helps them involve more people and get
more community support. YCP has an excellent, recently
updated website at www.youthcommunitypartnership.com
and can be contacted at gimliyouth@mts.net.
Karen Cyr nominated the WRHA Public Health Influenza
Immunization Community Volunteer Program for the Mayor's
Volunteer Service Award. She said it definitely made
an impact on the Volunteer Services program. The volunteers
were surprised and really appreciated receiving such
a big award. This program was only three years old
and to be able to celebrate in such a big way really
took the program to the next level. Karen also says
that it has made it easier to recruit more volunteers
because when people find out that the program won
an award they want to get involved too.
The greatest benefit, according to Karen, was how
much the award increased the visibility of the Volunteer
Services program within the WRHA. The award was highlighted
in a number of internal newsletters, as well as a
WRHA magazine called "Aspire" which is for
the general public. The award really caught the attention
of WRHA senior managers and Program directors, who
value the role volunteers have in the delivery of
health services. To learn more about volunteering
at WRHA call 787-5078 or visit their website: www.wrha.mb.ca
Nominations are now being accepted for more than 30
different types of awards to recognize Manitoba's
volunteers and the companies and media that support
our community volunteers.

The
following outstanding individual was this year's recipient
of the Golden Hand Award:
Golden
West Radio 950 - CFAM (Elmer Hildebrand) - Altona
Nominated by: Cleo Hunrichs & Heather
Unger, Plum Coulee Community Foundation
To
help fundraise and promote numerous beautification
projects for the town of Plum Coulee, Golden West
Radio’ generously donated advertising dollars to promote
events and meetings. Staff regularly pitch in as volunteers
during events including Sports Day, Plum Fest and
farmer appreciation barbecues. The station pledged

and CEO, Elmer Hildebrand also personally donated
$25,000 to assist the community’s development programs.
Golden West Radio is an integral part of the Plum

the recent improvements to the community would not
be feasible.
Winnipeg
Free Press (Kevin Rollason) - Winnipeg
Nominated by: Luann Lovlin, Director
of Communications, Winnipeg Foundation
In
January 2006, the Winnipeg Free Press launched a new
Philanthropy section, a full-page published on the
last Saturday of each month. Profiling Manitoba charitable
organizations, events in the non-profit sector and
remarkable individuals who bring philanthropy alive
in the community, the idea for the page was developed
by the Winnipeg Foundation in an effort to raise public
awareness about the impact of philanthropy in all
our lives. Kevin Rollason has been the lead reporter
and a solid supporter of the project, demonstrating
his commitment to the community with his thoughtful
reporting on issues and initiatives in the charitable
sector.
Kevin Rollason has focused on the powerful and positive
work making a difference in our community and stories
that are both inspiring and warm the heart.
